Bluebird to 'Fly' Again on Coniston Water

ByANDY FLEMING
It's January 4, 1967 and Donald Campbell attempts the water speed record, seconds before the fateful crash.

It has been more than five years since a team of volunteers started work on an ambitious project in north east England: No less than the complete rebuilding of the famous Bluebird K7 boat, which crashed on the UK Lake District's Coniston Water in 1967. The driver Donald Campbell CBE, an iconic British hero died whilst trying to break a water speed record as he travelled at speeds in excess of 300mph. Campbell is the only person to have set both world water and land speed records in the same year (1964).

The original Bluebird K7 boat was pulled out of the water in 2001 by a team of underwater divers. Backed by the pilot's daughter, Gina Campbell, a small team of diving enthusiasts and volunteer engineers based in a workshop in North Shields on Tyneside is putting the original Bluebird back together using 90 per cent of the original parts and fabric - even removing and then replacing thousands of individual rivets. The team also have a pilot to take the finished boat back onto the water at Coniston for its 100mph run.

Shop, Relax and Unwind in Darlington

ByANDY FLEMING

If you're visiting north east England, Darlington is a great place to relax and unwind with unique heritage and contemporary attractions, and this award-winning, floral town will certainly surprise and delight you!

Darlington has been a regional centre since Saxon times, and rose to prominence with the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.  Justifiably proud of its railway pioneers, Darlington celebrates its rail heritage at the Railway Centre & Museum, which houses the world's first passenger-pulling locomotive, "Locomotion No 1" and today celebrates rail heritage with a contemporary twist with the stunning floral replica of Locomotion and the spectacular life size brick sculpture "Train", an all-year-round attraction at the side of the A66.

A shopper's paradise, Darlington boasts twice weekly open air markets, monthly Farmer's Markets and speciality French and seasonal Christmas markets plus an original Victorian Market Hall - as befits a pioneering market town. Modern, bright and airy shopping malls and designer/speciality outlets in the medieval-like Yards and Wynds or the up-market Imperial Quarter, complete the shopping mix in a town which is compact and easy to get around. After a fun-filled shopping session, take a break and relax in an aroma-filled continental café or bistro to watch the world go by.

By day or night, Darlington offers plenty of entertainment to choose from, ranging from street theatre, live music, art exhibitions, a 51 acre town centre park, hugely successful Edwardian theatre and award-winning Dolphin Leisure complex, plus great pubs, bars and restaurants.

On the Rails: A FREE Day Out at the National Railway Museum

By ANDY FLEMING
Former GWR Class 4000 steam locomotive number 4003 'Lode Star' on the turntable at the National Railway Museum, York.

The National Railway museum in York has the world's largest collection of train exhibits in the world dating back over 300 years. You can't fail to be impressed by the legendary steam, diesel and electric locomotives on display. There are 750,000 objects in this museum but the highlights are a replica of the Rocket, the first steam locomotive built in 1829, the Mallard, the world's fastest steam engine, Japanese Bullet trains and the carriage used by Queen Victoria between 1869 and 1901.

There is a daily turntable demonstration to show how several tons of railway locomotive could be turned on a sixpence. You can explore the workings of steam locomotives and watch the complex mechanism work before your eyes.

Train enthusiasts can get in the cab of a steam engine, build a loco, control a train and watch a live link to York's electronic signal box. For those interested in history there are exhibitions on the Flying Scotsman and British Rail.

Young kids (3-8) can let off steam in the railway themed play area or enjoy the miniature railway.

The best news is that it’s free to enter the museum, which also boasts some superb cafes and restaurants, model railway displays and workshops.  Parking is just £7 for the entire day in the long stay car park.

The museum is adjacent to the magnificent York Railway station on Leeman Road, so for convenience and cost why not let the train take the strain? There are regular through train services from Hartlepool and the journey takes just over an hour. For full details of fares and train times visit the National Rail Enquiries website at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ or phone 08457 48 49 50.
